The Remarkable Work of Alpha Bangoura
in Sierra Leone
bringing hope and restoring family life in the aftermath of civil war
At the conclusion of
the devastating civil war that traumatized Sierra Leone for more than one decade, Alpha Bangoura began his work to assist
the displaced and orphaned children. These represented a great percentage of Sierra Leone's population, and included parents
who has lost their children to the ravages of war. Alpha Bangoura accepted this mission to help the destitute children, and
to find homes for them with parents who had lost one, two, or all of their children to this terrible war. Alpha recognized
a potential to help these children, and grieving parents, in a unique and immediate way.
While the infrastructure
of the nation was devested and in ruins, Alpha recognized that there was a wide network of families, mothers, fathers, grandmothers
and grandfathers, who were willing to accept displaced and orphaned children into their homes. Many of these had also lost
children to the war, and were longing to fill the void this loss had left behind.
Organizing a remarkable,
grassroots effort, Alpha began to coordinate the households that could accept children, and began an office in Freetown to
facilitate these placements, as well as the necessary infrastructure that these new families would need: health care,
schooling, and financial aid. In this way, he began a network orphanage that could function within the society of his country,
and assist children to return to a normal, and functioning family life.
